I recently got the opportunity to shoot a really fun event, the " 2016 DNA After Dark" Dance Showcase.
This annual gathering of the Washington DC and surrounding area dance community, is a celebration of movement and artistry, and an awesome party.
The show is put every year by the Fierce Collabo Dance Inc., an urban dance company based in the heart of the city. This was the 2nd time that I was attending the show, and this time, they invited me to join the media team. It was great to see some of the artists again and reconnect with their executive Director and Founder, Toya McKay.
The show took place at the 9:30 Club, one of Washington DC famed local landmarks, lesser known by tourists, but home to some of the greatest artists stopping in the capital. The night was great and filled with amazing performances by the dance community. So much that I honestly caught myself, at times, following the performance instead of photographing it. The display of talent was outstanding and the vibe in the room was as positive as could have been.
The hosts for the night Lauren Devera and Carlo C-Lo, both awesome dancers, kept the ball rolling and made sure we knew what was going on.
Here is a collection of shots from that celebration. It follows the chronology of the night, from the groups signing up and registering for their performance, to the various ways of getting ready while fighting the stress buildup and keeping an eye on the competition's work, to finally each group or solo dancer giving their best on the stage.
To close the show, the Fierce Collabo Team, rushed on stage and showed appreciation to their leader Toya and her sidekick Christina with flowers and hugs. There was a lot of emotion and Toya shed a few tears.
All in all, this was a great night. I am already looking forward to next year's showcase, and who knows, I might even dust off the dancer in me...
